Robert Forster: The 10 Rules of Rock And Roll (2011)

Robert Forster var ein av dei to gitarist/vokalistane i det fantastiske bandet The Go-Betweens. Det bandet vart lagt ned for andre gong då den andre gitarist/vokalisten, Grant McLennan døydde i 2006. Året før tok Forster til som musikkskribent i tidsskriftet The Monthly. I denne boka er eit utval av artiklane hans samla, og det er ei bok som er verdt bryet.

Om lag halvparten av artiklane er platemeldingar. Resten av boka er bokmeldingar, konsertmeldingar, nokre få om band Forster set høgt, og eit par flotte minneord om McLennan. Forster er grundig, han har stor kunnskap om musikk og om artistane han skriv om, og han skriv knakande godt.

Nokre døme: Den kortaste platemeldinga er om Honeycomb, gitt ut av Frank Black, og meldinga sluttar slik: "It's not background music and yet it slides easily into the background, with a classic '70s feel, so that back at the barbecue someone is saying, "Isn't this a great record?" - and you think, Well, not really, as you reach for another beer." I omtalen av ein musikkfestival skriv han at "It should be noted that, as ever, the bands with the strangest names often make the least convincing music". Og opninga av boka, der han kort og utan noko forklaring ramsar opp dei ti reglane for rock'n'roll, er òg midt i blinken. Eg gidd ikkje ramsa opp alle her, men "never follow an artist who describes his or her work as dark", "the band with the most tattoos has the worst songs", eller "the second-last song on every album is the weakest", skulle gje eit godt inntrykk av kvar han har lagt lista.
